About the event
“Art in Switzerland” meets online on ZOOM three Wednesdays: August 5th, August 12th and August 19th, 2026. We explore the rich artistic sights in the alpine city of Lucerne and the international collections of the Basel art museum. Lucerne is the home of the Medieval 14th century chapel bridge and the emotionally moving ‘Lion’ monument. Basel has become a world-class venue for contemporary exhibitions, but the city showcases masterworks by the Renaissance painters Holbein, Cranach and Grünewald, along with Rembrandt, Ingres, Delacroix, Monet, Van Gogh, Chagall, Picasso, Böcklin and the powerful expressionism of Kokoschka, Klee and Marc. The vital character of European creativity is on display in Switzerland. Your presenter is John Paul Thornton, who brings this art history to life.
