About the event
Colorful themes of the Holy land, North Africa and Arabia filled the imaginations of nineteenth and early twentieth century painters. Dreamy-eyed harems, camel caravans, Bedouin camps and incense-filled palaces on the Nile became sensational subjects for artists in search of stimulating imagery. Â Existing between Documentary-style realism and fantastic Romanticism, "Orientalism" has been heralded as ingenious, vilified as sentimental and is now at the heart of many vital contemporary discussions about race and culture in art history. Artists featured include Gerome, Bridgman, Bouguereau and Matisse. Â Join Presenter John Paul Thornton on this Three part Online Presentation. Â Meets December 14, 21, 28 Â 2023, from 10am-Noon, Pacific Standard Time.
